"TOTAL DEVASTATION", — New Zealand's Locals Faced Cyclone Gabrielle → State of Emergency Declared

FEBRUARY 12–14, 2023.

🌀 NEW ZEALAND: Tropical Cyclone Gabriel raged for three days over the North Island of New Zealand — abnormal amounts of rainfall, record storm surge, rapid rise of rivers, numerous landslides, widespread destruction of infrastructure.

Because of the magnitude of the disaster, a state of emergency was declared in the country for the third time in history.

🌊 Hurricane winds with gusts of over 87 mph and waves as high as 12 meters were blowing for hours in coastal areas. Some communities were isolated, including information, due to damage to cell phone towers.

⚠️ Severe weather conditions made it difficult to evacuate and conduct rescue operations. Many people waited on rooftops for help. At least four deaths were reported.

💦 Cyclone Gabriel came to New Zealand just two weeks after unprecedented heavy rains caused devastating flooding in Auckland and Northland. The successive storms sparked nationwide speculation about the country's preparedness for future threats as climate change triggers the formation of increasingly extreme weather systems.
