ATYPICAL winter 2023: ABNORMAL snowfall, floods in the desert, storms and showers

With the arrival of the winter season on different continents, from North America to East Asia, there is an abnormal and even record accumulation of snow.

MID-JANUARY 2023

❄️ USA, CALIFORNIA: As of January 17, 2023, the level of snow cover on the Sierra Nevada mountain range and its environs reached 250% of the norm. If we take into account the satellite photo, which shows changes over 80 days, we can assume that this place is the largest snow bag on the planet.

MID-JANUARY 2023

❄️ USA, ARIZONA: From January 14 to 17, a record snowfall hit the northern part of the state. In some places, the height of the snow cover reached more than one and a half meters. It was the largest three-day snowfall in the history of the state.

JANUARY 15–18, 2023

❄️ PYRENEES: In some places on the Pyrenean mountains separating France and Spain, the height of the snow cover reached two meters.

JANUARY 17, 2023

🌊 TIBET, NYINGCHI: An avalanche descended in the Himalayas took the lives of at least 28 people. She blocked the exit from the tunnel near the Tibetan city of Nyingchi. People were trapped right in their cars.

❄️ NORTHWEST CHINA: A rare snowfall covered the Taklamakan desert. A sharp cold snap caused the rolling desert dunes to turn into snow-capped mountains.

🌀 SPAIN: The Fiennes storm brought heavy snowfalls to Spain and a sharp drop in temperatures throughout most of the country. The snowfall has made life much more difficult in many communities, especially in the northern provinces. Hundreds of kilometers of roads were blocked by snowdrifts.

JANUARY 21–23, 2023

❄️ JAPAN, HOKKAIDO ISLAND: An extremely strong wave of cold came to the Japanese archipelago. In Hokkaido, a widespread blizzard has already created a lot of trouble for its residents.

🌀 SAUDI ARABIA: During this month, the climate anomalies in the country were simply shocking. The desert suffered from floods more than once, and then from anomalous hail and snowfalls.
